Signs your website needs a refresh

Written by Mat

We love our clients, and we love the websites we've built for them. But here's something we've learned after years in this business: even the best websites have a shelf life. Not because they break or stop working, but because businesses evolve, industries change, and what felt perfect three years ago might now feel a bit... well, three years old.

This isn't a criticism of the work we did together - it's just reality. We built you a website that was perfect for where your business was then. But if you're reading this and thinking, "Hmm, maybe it's time for a refresh", here are some signs that might confirm what you're already feeling.

Your business has evolved, but your website hasn't

When we first built your website, you had a clear vision of what your business was and where it was heading. But here's the thing about running a business - it rarely stays the same. Maybe you started as a local service provider and now you're working with clients across the country. Perhaps you started with one core service and have since expanded into areas that your customers have been requesting.

Your website should tell the story of where you are now, not where you were three years ago. If potential clients land on your homepage and the first thing they see is a service you barely offer anymore, while your main revenue stream is buried three clicks deep, that's a problem. It's like wearing a suit that fitted perfectly five years ago but now pinches in all the wrong places.

Your industry has left you behind

Remember when having any website at all put you ahead of half your competitors? Those days are long gone. While you've been busy running your business, your competitors have been busy making their online presence slicker, faster, and more user-friendly.

Customer expectations have shifted, too. What felt cutting-edge when we launched your site might now feel clunky compared to the apps and websites your clients use every day.

Your content has gone stale

We gave you a beautiful, functional website, but websites need feeding. That blog section we set up? If the most recent post is from 2022, it's not doing you any favours. Your Recent Projects gallery, filled with work from the pandemic era, tells visitors that either you haven't done anything noteworthy lately, or you don't have time to update your website.

Fresh content isn't just about looking current - it's about showing that your business is alive and thriving. When potential clients see outdated information, they start wondering if you're still in business or if you've lost enthusiasm for what you do. Your website should feel like a living representation of an active, growing company.

Technology has moved on

Your website works perfectly fine, but "fine" might not be good enough anymore. The web moves fast, and what was best practice three years ago might now be holding you back. Mobile usage has exploded across most industries, and if your site was designed in the desktop-first era, it might be frustrating the majority of your visitors who are browsing on their phones.

Security standards have tightened, accessibility requirements have evolved, and search engines have changed what they reward. Your site isn't broken, but it might not be performing as well as it could be. It's like driving a car from 2015 - it'll get you where you need to go, but you're missing out on better fuel efficiency, safety features, and that smooth ride you didn't know you wanted.

Time for a refresh?

Look, we're not trying to sell you a new website just because we fancy a new project. We're genuinely proud of the work we've done together, and if your current site is still serving you well, that's fantastic. But if any of this resonates with you, if you've been feeling like your website doesn't quite represent where your business is now, then maybe it's time for a conversation.

A website refresh doesn't have to mean starting from scratch. Sometimes it's about updating content, improving user experience, or adding new functionality. Sometimes it means a complete redesign. The important thing is making sure your online presence reflects the vibrant, evolving business you're actually running.

If you're nodding along to any of this, get in touch. We'd love to chat about where your business is heading and how your website can better support that journey.
